European Directives:

EUROPEAN DIRECTIVES 2002/95/EC (RoHS) and 2002/96/EC (WEEE)

Thales Computers is committed to meet the RoHS (Restricted use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipments) and WEEE (Waste of electrical and electronic equipments) European directives requirements .Thales Computers has been WEEE compliant since June 2005.

Thales Computers is ready to deliver full RoHS compliant products by July 1, 2006.

Thales Computers intends to migrate to RoHS compliance for its SA grade products ( 0-55°C) and communicate its compliance to its customers . Each time a product will be labelled fully RoHS compliant, customers will be informed accordingly. Customers with frozen versions will be notified if and when their product will migrate to RoHS version.

Thales Computers will nevertheless continue to manufacture "leaded" (eg with SnPb technology) products for Customers that do not wish to migrate and benefit of an exemption (especially Defence & Aerospace). Customers will be responsible for the final application and its exemption.

As a consequence of this:
- ROHS traceability will be provided to customers: lead-free products will be identified with specific references ;
- The life cycle of "leaded" catalog products will follow Thales Computers standard procedure : the announcement of the transfer to its "Restricted availability" catalog will be done with 6 months prior notice. The procedure for the ordering and the supply of such products will follow the standard long term conditions, unless otherwise is agreed with the Customer.. Same procedure applies for "customized" products or frozen versions.
For products manufactured with SnPb technology, Thales Computers may use RoHS components without prior notice.

Thales Computers reviews all pertinent directives and standards to determine the tests appropriate for product compliance. Thales Computers has determined that 89/336/CEE (EMC Council Directive) modified with 92/31/CEE, 93/68/CEE and 2004/108/CEE was the most applicable test guideline for single-board computers (SBCs) and board products. For systems and enclosure products, conformance to 73/23/CEE (Low Voltage Directive) modified with 93/68/CEE is also tested before applying the CE marking.

Labelling/Marking: Thales Computers board products can be CE Marked, having met electromagnetic compatibility requirements when tested in a typical system. As a courtesy to customers and when the real estate on the product allows it, Thales Computers board products can be delivered with a CE label. This, however, does not preclude of the conformance of the final customer system to the EEC directives, which remains under the responsibility of Thales Computers customers.

Safety :

Health and safety for our customers, contractors and employees is key for Thales Computers. These two points are systematically analysed during the design of new products

  • MTBF: theoretical calculations are performed following MIL HDBK217F standard for each new Thales Computers design.
  • Hazardous materials: Thales Computers keeps the list of potentially hazardous substances available for each board.
  • Temperature Hazards (hot components) : Thales Computers developments take into account these measurements during products qualification. Maximum temperatures are measured and registered for each board.
  • High energy storage devices : all capacitors are rated for the appropriate voltage.
  • Hazardous voltages and currents : Maximum currents depend on the boards, but are of course precisely measured and registered. And in any case, voltages and currents are compliant with VME or CPCI or PMC standards. On some of our boards, a battery can be found, it is generally directly connected to the NVRAM as an internal connection.
  • Mechanical hazards (e.g. sharp edges, moving parts) : These points are strictly controlled during developments. No sharp edges and no moving parts will be found on our boards.
  • Flammability rating : We can guarantee PCBs are UL94-V0 and connectors are at least UL94-V2 compliant for all of our boards.
  • EMC specification : Tests are performed by subcontractors. Evidences of these compliances are available for every board.
